WAGS 08.05.2019: Mira Rio

The ever-reliable John stepped forward to lead this week and having spent the previous weeks in Italy, subconsciously selected Mira Rio as the start point, which we all know is an anagram for 'Iri Roma' , which could at a stretch be translated as 'Be (in) Rome'!  The Romans preferred to walk in straight lines, but this time John avoided convention by walking in a circle and then spoiled it by throwing in two hills!

Mira Rio was open for a starter coffee, and a starter photo, which was sent to me despite the ongoing technical problems with John's 'new' computer.

L-R:  Antonio with Ember, Ingrid, Myriam and Maria (in a huddle), Terry, Paul, Antje, Yves, Hazel, Rod and John - + 6 Tilleys (spot the fake) Bet Terry wishes he had worn his!!

It was actually quite a warm, notwithstanding Antonio's layers, but the draught from his drone probably keeps him cool.

The route had the comfort of familiarity, and even Myriam knew where we were going.
This was John's official map of the track:-

He reported the stats as:
Total distance: 8.28 kms
Total time. 2 hours 20 mins
Ascent: 258 metres.
I would guess
Moving time: 1 hour 58 mins
Moving speed: 4.3 kph.

I differ in that he appears to have omitted at least 30 minutes of total time as I got back in 2 hrs 41 minutes at least 10 minutes ahead of the main field, owing to my having rejected the gratuitous second hill thrown in to extend his walk.  In fact my Garmin stats were not so different from  his in terms of distance, although I only climbed 138 m.

My ViewRanger track credits me with a shorter distance, but a more significant climb.  Lies Damned Lies and Statistics Eh!

The highlight of the walk (apart from the post walk Favas, and Hazel's special offer cut price avocados), was Antonio's Super Drone which was launched to good effect, and produced some remarkably clear photos of the river and our group.

Lower level drone shot of WAGS at Miradouro

The confluence  from high level.

Arty shot from Antonio, not sure whether it was the way out or back.

This was on the way out. Seems an expensive structure for an angling stand, and there was some speculation as to who had commissioned it and why! The fisherman seemed to have something on his line, so we stopped to watch, but eventually it got away!

Round the aqueduct, currently quite full.

.
A short pause at the viewpoint and a chance to admire 5 of the 6 Tilleys on display. The ringer is quite obvious to the cognoscenti!! If Myriam and Terry had worn theirs, it would have been a record percentage.

John admiring the fine view of Silves, revealed as we come round the channel after the viewpoint.

At last we reached the Clube Nautico with its eccentric sign post, and a useful toilet stop..

Antonio fired up the drone again

Keeping a close eye on it.

And Maria took a rest.......

.....on the 'lawn'!

This one entitled 'Three Donkeys in a dry field!'

On the way - flag fluttering proudly.

Of course we had to include at least one hill, but happily the adage 'What goes up...... ' still holds true.
Soon after descending from this clearly inadequate climb, our Leader decided he had not done enough and turned up another hill. At this point, I realised I still hadn't lost my sea legs, so took the low road, which as statistics proved, was only marginally shorter.

Soon I was back at Mira Rio where I met Chris, who had been suffering from a sore back, and my appetite had been sufficiently sharpened to order the prato do dia - Favas.

Very tasty and at least two portions of your 5-a day, but also some chorizo and fatty looking pork rind. It was too much, so I shared with Myriam, as did Antje and Chris. Only Maria went the Full Monty

The others were only 10 minutes behind and Mira Rio was doing us proud with speed of service and a very able young waiter.

Ingrid staying out of it...

Rod went for the TM..........

....which looked delicious, although the Daily Mail reckons the combination of processed meat, dairy and bread could seriously harm your health. Still we have the medicine!

Just for the record, Antonio is still exercising self restraint and this week didn't even purloin half if his Father's TM, reserving his appetite for dinner. There is no record of what he consumed then.

WAGS 01.05.2019 Terry in Alte

Rod and I both away this week - Rod in UK on family duties and Myriam and I on the High Seas, actually docked in Tenerife on this day.
Terry was the volunteer as usual and offered a walk in Alte. In his inimical fashion, the WhatsApp call went like this:-

Hi all, I willing will walk on Wednesday
and lead anyone who would like to
come, we can't sit on bums anymore
and blame the weather, let's meet at
Alte O Folk lor cafe for 10 am start let
me know if coming.

Quick responses from Ingrid Yves and Dina, and by other media from Janet.

Ingrid proved her expertise with the starter photo, though how remains a mystery for the moment.

We were in Lanzarote when I received this starter pic from Terry and the accompanying description

Morning Paul hope your cruise 🚢 is good. Five of us had a good walk yesterday from Alte needless to say it was heaving with people for the May 1 day celebrations, very 🥵 walk  gasping for refreshments, this time I knew where to go to get TM and much needed Sagres. Would you like me to wait till you are back before I send report & pics? Let you get on with whatever you do cruising. 😎

As we had a tough walk getting up here with Myriam.......

...I reserved the right to deal with WAGS affairs until we returned.

On returning on 7th May, I received some pics and a short billet douce re Terry's walk, which are set out below for completeness.

Not much evidence of walking.............!

.... more a spa visit, but even Janet didn't take the waters.

Tel even got the date right on this pic!

Not walking again!!

Janet seems to have been booked as the lead model for this photographic essay.

Here is Terry's succinct walk report:-

The famous 5 turned up in Alte for a hastily planned walk on a hot dry Wednesday which has been in short supply lately, I kept it easy along good tracks, past the fount were it was getting ready for a day of mass barbecuing drinking and enjoyment. The walk was just a big loop round via Benafim and back to Alte, too hot just not used to it yet, but at least we got out and done it. Thanks

The stats were also furnished

which showed that he had been rather cavalier with the WAGS parameters. Never mind, we will balance that out next week.

And of course the obligatory post walk restorative provender!

which look exceedingly nutritious, and I am sure compensated for the extra kilometrage.

Yves shadow boxing on what looks like a very pleasant day to sit in the shade.

Thanks Terry for keeping it going, an offer which is open to all WAGS on any Wednesday!

WAGS 24.04.2019: Rain Rain - so we went away!

At least we had the fuel back, but alas the threat of rain (again) and a marked lack of enthusiasm, meant that by Tuesday evening , only 3 - Rod, Chris and  Antje had signed up, and Rod gritted his teeth and called off the proposed excursion, which is among the most cancelled walks of all time.
Myriam and I were away, and despite the spitting rain in Lisbon, made an effort to get out and at least participate in the traditional TM breakfast......

......and very up-to-standard it was, although the distance we had to walk to indulge didn't merit the size and calorific value.  Myriam even got a proper teapot, although her choice of wild berry tisane was a little peculiar.

Chris and Antje made the effort to drag Sasha along the beach and got wet (twice) for their trouble.

The Happy Wanderer.

From far flung parts more WAGS' WhatsApps arrived to provide material to bulk out the blog.

Lindsey was in the Orient and made an understated comment " It's warm and humid here!" from a very colourful flower market.

The Hopes were celebrating a significant Anniversary  in Venice, and John is pictured going for the Italian Walkers boot - a Calzone, as a gesture towards the Wednesday lost.

Somehow his scholar's Latin was insufficient for him to order fluently so he had to turn to the Collins Easy Learning Italian Phrase Book.  Apparently Livy's comment 'Romanis pilibus erectis' didn't go down well.

Later Hazel regaled us with more photos of John going native in Italy. It is hardly the standard of Pizzeria Oliva in Lagos for after-walk post-pasti, but the Italians seem quite happy with it.

Even the Italian chefs couldn't ruin a Parma ham roll, served with a wooden fork and washed down with genuine Pellegrino water

and Panna Cotta with strawberries!

We persevered with Lisbon to get our Wednesday 8000 steps done, and had a notable Chinese lunch at The Old House in Parque de Nacoes.

A recommendation from Antonio de Montanha- very good but pricey.

Myriam studying the form! The photos didn't always match the Chinese descriptions, nor even the more fanciful English translations.

 Siu Lung Bau

Siu maai

Ngoh maai gai

Enough food. We had to walk it off and went round Rossio where we found a good T-shirt shop

Pun intended - but the prices were outside WAGS authorised limits!

We were still walking the next day 25th which commemorated the 1974 Carnation Revolution, and involved a long procession with armoured vehicles and lots of Goan carnation traders  supplying the marchers with flowers

.

Patriotic marchers........

......and Patriotic songs.

Do you remember where you were on 25th April 1974?
