WAGS 18.12.2019: One before Christmas

Sadly I am unable to rely on pictures to provide much colour to this blog as cameras and phones were buried under layers of impermeable rain-proofs.
Yes the first WAGS walk in a long time that we expected to get wet if it went ahead. Terry (Leader) promised to call round if it was to be cancelled but we knew he was unlikely to deem it unsuitable, being a veteran of the Brecon Beacons, where a fine day is less than 2" of rain
So the message went out WAGS are GO, and we set off for the RV at Restaurante Gralha in Vale Fuzeiros.  Very gray but only a little rain on the way, and M and I enjoyed the tortuous route round the barragem.
We arrived to find Rod already in position, but alas the Restaurante was firmly closed, and remained so all day.  We had noticed that Cafe Silva was open as we passed, so determined to take coffee there when everyone had arrived. Terry and Jill soon turned up and announced that we were only waiting for John, to complete the quorum.
After too much tea and a long drive from Lagos, Myriam had urgent needs so we set off for Cafe Silva only to find John and Maria already there. They had apparently arrived at 0930, and finding Gralha closed had cleverly anticipated that we would need caffeine at the nearest hostelry - Silva. However they omitted a vital step - to let the leader and/or others know that they had arrived and were at Silva.  So we had wasted valuable coffee time waiting at Gralha  until Terry managed to call John and establish his whereabouts.
All united at Silva we refuelled and enquired about the lunch for the day, anticipating an early return.

Starters: The Foolhardy Seven! John, Terry Jill, Paul Myriam, Rod, Maria

It was drizzling steadily by now, but nothing daunted, Terry promised to shorten the walk, and we geared up and set off.

Outside the closed Gralha. Man on phone at front was an innocent bystander

Becky was not that keen to go!

Here is the Leaders walk report in his own inimitable style:-

Just a short one of the Magnificent Seven Wags who turned up regardless of the weather, a small hiccup as to what Cafe was open, but after all the time spent with those  walking you know they will be in the next one open,  and so they were, after the required amount of coffee ☕️ we decided to walk all be it a short one, not the one I recced early, decided that was going to be too wet under foot. So the alternative walk was under way in the rain, when was the last time we walked in the rain in the Algarve!!  we are lucky to live in and walk in the pleasant climate of the Algarve. Good tracks we had all walked before in the Amorosa area any which way, for about the last 2 km it rained hard making the pace pick up a bit, back at the starter Cafe a quick 2 min drive the Cafe name I have forgotten, quick change to dry gear, the Prato’s of the day look good and so we all had a good lunch except Rod who was on a tight schedule. The weather was crap but who cares it was all about good company a nice lunch and conversation,
Thanks for walking Happy Christmas to you all terry & Jill

First hill in the gloom.

Just a little padding.  For the record I only took 7 pix including the food and stats - less than 20% of the usual number.  Luckily John managed the starter pic and a few other shots. The walk itself was not conducive to wielding expensive cameras and phones.
Despite Terry's platitudes his 'shorter' walk was not far off the published WAGs ideal parameters , coming in at 8.78 km and long gradual climbs up the ridge between Val Fuzeiros and Amorosa and back, yet because of the intellectual conversation en route ( which inevitably slows average speeds), it took us nearly 2 hrs 30 minutes, arriving back at Gralha around 1 pm, by which time the consensus was that we had satisfied Honour and were ready to attack the Prato de Dia on offer.

Talking Point: A stone sculpture of an edible mushroom - very realistic!

Despite nature's efforts to make our walk less pleasant, we still need much more rain to make an impression on the reservoirs.

Talking point: Have Red Indians colonised Vale Fuzeiros?

The damp streets of Amorosa

the leader spent a lot of time waiting for the rest to catch up.

The first Lily in the Valley:

The stats were: Total Distance:             8.78 km
                          Moving Time:              2hrs 7 mins
                          Total Time :                 2hrs 27 mins
                           Moving Avg.               4.1 km/hr
                          Overall Avg.                 3.5 km/hr
                           Total Ascent                233 m.

Our track

And then having driven the short distance back to Cafe Silva, we dried off marginally and prepared for the highlight of the day: Unfortunately, Rod had pressing business in Ourique and set off with sodden trousers and his heater on high.

What passes for happy WAGS!!, Myriam being the photographer.

We ordered two each of the Pratos de Dia to share, but unfortunately the Galinha com Grau was so popular we only had one portion. The others were Vitela Estufada and Coelho a Cacador.  We shared all but lack of photos of the delivered dishes can be explained by the feeding frenzy that followed their arrival.

John managed to snap one plate with a selection of mains

Prato combinado

There were some first class hand cut chips......

........and a few desserts.....

Together with coffee beers and water (hot for Myriam) this cost us Euros 45 (Euros 7.50 each ) and we went on our way replete, Honour satisfied  and rejoicing with an eye to the whole roast pig event coming up on 5th January.

Thanks to Terry for encouraging the faint hearted to continue - no walk on Christmas day, Myriam is keen to walk on New Year's Day if we can find somewhere appropriate open for lunch.

WAGS 11.12.2019: The Christmas Blowout

A picture is again this time worth 1000 words, so I don't propose to get too verbose in describing this event.
Ingrid undertook to arrange the lunch, being the obvious choice as she lived closest to the proposed venue, Jardim das Oliveiras, halfway up the road from Monchique to Foia, It is a well established place, and the owner Geraldino is a superb host.  Initially we thought that we were to order a la carte, but on being confronted with 21 of us, some known to be notoriously picky, Geraldino  took charge and proposed a selection of starters to share and several main courses to be spread along the tables. This worked very well and we had an efficient lady serving us with skill and dexterity.

Sadly the gloom of the Jardim's private inner sanctum was more akin to a lap dancing club (so I was told!) and the light foiled John's hi-tech Sony camera and I only achieved average results with my OnePlus 7 Pro.
   Here are the participants: L-R:
Yves, Katherine, Jim, Paul, Jill Terry, Peter Ingrid, Chris Rod, Sonia, Janet, Hazel, Hilke, Lindsey, Antje, Geraldine, Dina, John, Maria.   Myriam of course took the photo from her customary lofty perch. I took another with my hands aloft but this was less than perfect owing to Geraldine hiding her face, possibly because of her father's overt flirting with Myriam - or was it the other way round #metoo!

Nevertheless these photos are at the end of the meal and the photos of the typical Portuguese mountain food which was plentiful and superb, follow out of sequence.

Mixed cold starters: Presunto, Mushrooms, Chourico, Pork and olives

Polenta

The Mains:, Galo or Rooster stew with cabbage; Not all the ladies wanted this - perhaps it lost something in the translation!!

Cabrito

Jawali

Only a couple of the desserts which disappeared quickly before I could finish the photography

A Tiramisu creation

Chestnut with chocolate - just in time!

Our lady waitress dishing out the medronho and brandymel from glass boots.

Ready to dispense.

Thanks to Ingrid for organising the venue, to Geraldino and his staff for the great meal, to Rod for his usual oration, which I would report in full if he had reminded me, and to all the WAGS leaders and followers, who have joined in during 2019. Possibly, weather permitting one more walk this year, to be led by Terry in Vale de Fuzeiros.
Happy Christmas to one and all!

Sequel : A study in post lunch depression!

But there was a Happy one!

PS: After the event we discovered that Mike and Jyll had been en route to the lunch but had broken down about 3 km short.  They had been unable to harness the powers of modern communications and make Rod aware of their plight, so sadly missed the event and had to be content with a ride on a tow-truck

WAGS 4.12.2019: Montes de Cima or Autours du Autodrome

Herewith Rod´s report:-

“WAGS WALK 4/12
“A very tardy and brief report and photos on last week´s walk....maybe for some blog artist to convert to a more sophisticated format! (Duly done! Ed.)

The Starters at the Honey Café

Present were: John and Hazel, Terry and Jill, Peter, Dina, Yves  & Rod, plus Becky.

We all met up at Taberna do Manel, Montes de Cima and, after a few coffees, set off fairly punctually.
Past the erstwhile Patricia´s
One of the previous cross-country routes we had previously taken now bore an ominous Privado sign   Of course, we ignored that and pressed on without being accosted or shot by anyone.

A Portuguese Volcano
The  path had quite recovered from the fires of a year or two ago and was getting overgrown; however we reached the top which opened up a vista of perhaps Pestana´s least profitable hotel...not a guest nor employee to be seen.

We wandered over to the derelict farmstead just to the north of the Autódromo. This together with surrounding farmland seems to have been taken over by the Autódromo organisation and used as some sort of cross-country rally  practice area...

including an artificial mountain which John felt obliged to ascend (purely in the interests of the photographical record. Ed).

From there we wandered along the stream bed until we reached a point involving a minor amount of scrambling....

......this could of course have been avoided by walking along the race track circumference road which would have been terribly boring.

From there we headed up through a well-used gap in the fencing  which led on to a wider track. This followed upstream along the Ribeira de Arão which did show the odd sign of water here and there.

We had been along the upper part of this track before but the then wooded countryside has now been decimated by bulldozers...barring the odd fir or oak tree, the terraces are now denuded of any form of growth, awaiting who knows what.

This has rather spoiled what had been an attractive rural route but now has the advantage of opening up glorious vistas  of the architectural splendour of the desolate hotel!

Don´t go left !
 (But they did)

So different was the countryside and the bulldozed tracks  that our leader selected the wrong one at a crucial point.
The Wrong Track
This led back down to the Casais road again and meant a tarmac stroll for the last km or so. Not that it made any difference to the distance, which ended up a WAGS standard 10.6 km. So to the Taberna do Manel again..such friendly folk..where the tosta fare was well up to scratch.”

A sort of omelette for Hazel

The ordinary tosta

The Especial Tosta

Following last week´s collection of somewhat irrelevant and would be artistic pictures,  for the delectation of those among us who are enthusiasts for antique farm machinery, here are pictures of two tractors seen during the walk.

One a Fiat, the other of indecipherable make.

And to conclude, a map of the track, reconstructed on Google Earth from Rod´s ViewRanger images, and deliberately tilted to one side so as to include and show the monstrosity that is the Autodrómio.

and some statistics:-
Distance: 10.6 kms.
Total time: 3 hrs 23 mins.
Ascent: 202 metres
